Living Life by Design at Heartland Builders

At Heartland Builders, we believe that every inch of your new home should reflect your individual style and personality. Luckily, no one understands the value of design and personal preferences quite like our incredible designer, Theresa — a creative genius who loves nothing more than bringing your dream home to life.

When you work one-on-one with Theresa, you get the unmatched opportunity to take control of your unique vision and make it a reality. And did we mention how much fun this process is? We wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at Theresa’s unique perspective of her process, and who better to show you than Theresa herself!

“Talk about crazy weather… This polar vortex has basically brought West Michigan to a complete halt. But today, as blue skies peeked through the coldness, I ventured outside to pull together a lighting selection packet for one of my clients. For me, lighting is one of the most exciting elements of home design; it’s the accent or focal piece that can pull together the “outfit,” just like a piece of jewelry. It can be subtle and discreet, or command everyone’s visual attention (I’m channeling Iris Apfel).

As part of the “selections journey,” it’s important for me to learn each client’s fashion style, lifestyle, and how they want their home to feel. Do they want a restorative retreat or an activity center? Do they have any collections? What pieces of furniture are they bringing with them or planning to purchase new? What’s their neutral of choice — beige or gray?

As a seasoned interior designer, I become a “design profiler” when I meet with and listen to my clients. If my clients need help determining their design style, I’m right there at their service — which brings me back to lighting. Above all else, I’ve discovered that it’s best to do lighting selections towards the end of the journey, after I’ve determined each client’s overall style (craftsman, farmhouse, mid-century mod, rustic, bohemian, etc.), and helped them choose exterior finish sections and interior details.

By understanding each client’s style first, I’m able to make recommendations that best meet their vision and overall design intent. As we spend time together reviewing the function of spaces and rooms, determining ceramic tile and installation patterns, and choosing drawer hardware such as pulls and knobs, lighting becomes the icing on the cake; the final accessory!

While looking at the blue skies from Kendall Lighting Center’s showroom this afternoon, I couldn’t help but notice the unique characteristics of the chandeliers in the front windows — mixed materials, simplistic, low-profile forms, warm metals, hygge cozy, minimalist silhouettes with industrial overtones, prismatic reflections, and the warmth of the Edison Bulbs. I snapped some photos to share, and I hope you enjoy the breadth of design. Which one would you choose to “wear” in your home?”

Living my life by design,

Theresa
