Some Like it Hot: Sweat Equity at the Parade of Homes

There’s sweat equity, and there’s sweat equity. Our 2017 HBA Parade of Homes entry #28 was specifically designed with sweat equity in mind – but maybe not the kind of sweat equity you’re thinking about!
Our 2017 Parade of Homes’ clients’ family originally hails from Finland, and the Finns love their saunas. It’s true. We checked the internet, and sure enough, saunas are indeed “a thing” in Finland!
Well, you can take a Finn out of Finland but you can’t take the sauna love out of the Finn!
Our client explained that saunas are just a part of the Finnish cultural experienceand they are commonly included in private homes. Situated in a northernmost region geographically, cold is just something they get used to dealing with, and saunas provide immediate and thorough warming and a temporary reprieve from the harsh and cold outdoor conditions.
Our client has fond memories from his childhood helping his dad build their family’s sauna, and one of the must-have features in his dream home was – you guessed it – a sauna.

Is this what came to mind when we mentioned saunas?
Building a home with our design/build firm ensures that you can include every feature that you’d like to see in your home. You’re not limited by standard floor plans or finish options, ensuring that everything on your “wish list” makes the “build list” (budget permitting of course!). So when we heard that he wanted a sauna, we said “absolutely.”
But he didn’t want us to build his sauna. To keep the family tradition alive, our client is going to wait until after he moves in and then build it himself, with his father’s help.
Now THAT’S what we call sweat equity.
You may be contemplating the cold winter weather approaching and wonder how you might go about constructing a sauna in your home. Unfortunately, we can’t do that for you, but if you’d like a great DIY project, check out the instructions from Cedarbrook Saunas.
We enjoyed framing in the sauna room for them, knowing that we’ve helped facilitate continuing their family tradition. When you visit the HBA 2017 Fall Parade of Homes, you’ll have the opportunity to see where this is going to be built, and you’ll know you caught a glimpse of family history in the making!
