Looking for an impartial third party (i.e. non-resident) opinion? How about Forbes magazine. It has ranked Grand Rapids as a rising city for years. Might be because of the Ballet.. Or the Symphony… or the Zoo. Or because of its progressive, environmentally-conscious policies. Or because there’s plenty of art and artists everywhere.
On the quirkier side of things, there’s also a rideable pendulum, a carnivorous plant conservatory, a musical fountain, and the largest 25k race in the country. Grand Rapids is also really safe (like suburban boring safe), and has one of the best Children’s Hospitals. It also has some of the best beer and hot dogs in the state. (Which, if you know anything about Michigan, is saying a lot!) Tons of restaurants and cafes ascribe to the local/organic philosophy, and for the non-meat eaters, some of the hippest vegetarian/vegan spots are here, too.
